Coalition allies continue Libya air strikes
American, British and French forces have attacked Libya from the sea and from the air to stop Colonel Gaddafi’s offensive on the rebel-held east of the country. Libyan officials say at least 48 people have been killed in the strikes, which began on Saturday. There has been no independent confirmation of the death toll. TO READ – Libya: a timeline of international diplomacy British Defence Secretary Liam Fox said the coalition was only hitting military targets. He added the weaponry used was “designed to minimise civilian casualties.” Russia, which abstained in the key Security Council vote, has called on the allies to stop “the non-selective use of force” in Libya. It is the West’s biggest military intervention in the Arab world since the US-led invasion of Iraq eight years ago. Gaddafi has accused Britain, France and the United States of “terrorism” and warned that his country will fight “a long war” to repel their attacks. Copyright © 2011 euronews

Bahrainis flock to protest funerals
Thousands of Bahrainis have joined funeral processions for three people killed in a government crackdown on protesters. Bahrain’s security forces moved in on anti-government protesters in the early hours of Thursday morning. Three deaths have been confirmed and it is known that more than 230 people were injured. Dozens more were detained. Police cleared Pearl Square in the capital Manama where demonstrators had been camping out to call on their Sunni leaders to grant them greater rights and freedoms. Bahrain has been ruled by a Sunni minority since the 18th century. 70 percent of its population are Shias. State television showed images of knives and firearms which authorities claim were found in tents belonging to the protesters. Eyewitnesses say police shot pellets, rubber bullets and tear gas to force them out of the square. Bahrain’s top Shia cleric has called the police attack a “massacre” and said that the government has shut the door to dialogue. Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed al-Khalifa has rejected that account, saying police “took every care possible.” He added the action was necessary to pull the country back from “the brink of a sectarian abyss.” Bahrain’s main opposition Shia bloc has said it was quitting parliament for good in protest at the security forces’ actions. European consular help abroad
Brussels has set out to remind Europeans in difficulty of their rights. During emergencies, such as in Japan or Libya recently, EU citizens abroad have the right to ask for help from any EU consulate or embassy where their country is not directly represented. But many Europeans do not know they have this right, so the European Commission is taking steps to boost citizens?? awareness. Europeans take more than 90 million trips outside the EU each year and around 30 million live in non-EU countries. Yet it is only in the US, China and Russia that every one of the 27 member states has a diplomatic mission. Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Justice and Citizenship, explained: “We have to clarify some questions: let’s take Luxembourg citizens who are lost in Kazakhstan and the British embassy is going to save them, that comes at a cost to the British tax payer, so it is normal that they are paid back by the Luxembourg authorities. How this transfer is going to take place, that has to be regulated by a European law and will be.” A website on consular protection is being launched, providing addresses of diplomatic missions in non-EU countries and access to all EU member states’ travel advisory services.
